Is Game Pass Worth It? A Simple Break-Even Check
Skip the hype. Here is a five-minute way to see whether a subscription beats buying.
Whether Game Pass is worth it depends on you, not on the service. Plans and prices change, so we will not quote numbers here. Check Microsoft's own page for the current price of the plan you are considering, then run this check.
Step 1: list the games you want to play
Write down the games you intend to play in the next three months. Be honest: only count the ones you would really start.
Step 2: see which ones are included
Open each game in GGz to see whether Game Pass carries it today. Count only the included games.
Step 3: price what you would have paid
For each included game, check what it costs to buy. GGz shows the live price across 14 stores, so you use the cheapest option, not full price.
Step 4: compare with the subscription cost
Multiply the plan's monthly price by the number of months you expect to play those games. If the cheapest purchase prices add up to more than that, the subscription wins. If not, buying on sale is cheaper.
Step 5: add the extras
Count games you would never have tried but will sample, and any other benefits of the plan you will actually use. Those are real value, but only if you use them.
Two cautions
Games leave the service, so check what is leaving soon before you start a long one. Also, a subscription you stop using still costs money, so cancel when your list is done and resubscribe when new games arrive.
GGz tracks Game Pass, PS Plus, EA Play, Ubisoft+ and Amazon Luna, and can alert you when a game you follow is about to leave.
